The Small Molecule Discovery and Development (SMDD) group at Corteva Agriscience is looking to hire a Synthetic Chemist at its Indianapolis Global Headquarters.  The SMDD group at Corteva Agriscience is comprised of Discovery Chemistry, Discovery Process Sciences, Process Science and Technology and the Enabling Capabilities groups and represents a significant portion of our R&D innovation engine working towards sustainable crop protection solutions. We are looking for scientists who can work as part of a multidisciplinary team to discover, develop and launch our crop protection pipeline. 
This position is focused on the design and discovery of novel small molecules and sustainable building blocks aligned to our Discovery Chemistry Team. The candidate must have a solid knowledge of small-molecule, organic synthesis theory and methodology. 

Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with team members, the candidate will design, synthesize, isolate and characterize novel molecules enabled by modern reaction platforms, purification tools, and analytical instrumentation.
  • Develop an understanding of biology, biochemistry and computational chemistry to innovate and generate and test novel hypotheses.
  • Evaluate compounds using cutting edge cheminformatics tools to accurately and efficiently interpret biological data to drive structure activity relationship (SAR).
  • Effectively interact with key stakeholders and peers and maintain flexibility to accommodate urgent projects and reprioritize work as needed.

  • Technical Competence:  Must be able to generate and interpret data to solve organic synthesis problems.  Must be able to work cross-functionally to identify and enable new chemistry. 
  • Innovation:  The objective of the job is to create new biologically active molecules having sustainable characteristics.  The ideal candidate will problem solve by generating novel ideas and by creatively applying synthetic technology. 
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness:  All projects are conducted in a team-based environment.  Success is achieved through the effective leveraging of cross-functional resources.  Interaction with others and ability to build and sustain effective relationships is crucial.
  • Initiative:  The person must be able to work independently to achieve results.  Assistance will be provided in defining and prioritizing goals; however, the individual must show initiative in planning and working to meet the defined objectives. 
  • Teamwork:  All projects are managed by teams of varying size.  Cooperating and contributing to meet team objectives is critical.

Qualifications


Requirements:
What expertise have you grown? What do you bring to the table?

  • BS/MS in Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
  • 1-5 years of experience in an industrial chemistry, R&D laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Strong synthetic chemistry background is required.
  • Expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds.
  • A proven track record of solving complex synthetic problems is required.
  • Effective communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong desire to work in a collaborative team environment
