We are currently seeking an Applied Genetics Scientist- Molecular Breeding based in Durham, North Carolina or Stanton, Minnesota to join our Vegetables and Flowers Seeds Development team.
You will help meet the world’s most pressing needs to:
Discover, deliver and deploy traits in breeding pipelines to deliver on TPPs Enable marker-assisted workflow to accelerate trait introduction and integration Design and deploy genomic resources and platforms to enable trait and germplasm initiatives
Accountabilities
Lead or participate in trait discovery and development projects including planning, design, coordination, and execution in partnership with Trait Development and Germplasm Development teams. Engage in external collaborations when applicable and regularly report on research outcomes and project advancement. Drive phenotypic and genotypic data analysis such as genetic mapping, genome-wide association, and genomic prediction to derive trait insights. Explore innovative methods for the identification of novel favorable alleles for target traits aligned with product profiles and market segments needs. Contribute to the development and transfer of marker assays to laboratories and engage in continuous improvement of marker-trait associations. Drive design of genotyping platforms, deployment of genomic resources/technologies and curation of relevant tools. Drive enablement and implementation of marker-assisted workflows for trait deployment, and ensure proper germplasm advancement, within budget and timeframe. Work closely with Germplasm Development teams to optimize use of markers in breeding programs and contribute to germplasm development strategies. Develop deep understanding of the crops and respective market segments to ensure successful application of technology Keep up to date with internal and external scientific advancements in germplasm, breeding and genetics methodologies and genomics and analytics toolbox. Propose and lead development of new tools, protocols and methods, and share experience across crops and functions. Secure intellectual property as appropriate and maintain awareness of intellectual property landscape in relevant crops.
Requirements Critical Knowledge
PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics or related field, plus 0-2 years’ experience. Expertise in mendelian, quantitative and molecular genetics, breeding methods, statistics and experimental design, and relevant technologies
Critical Experience
Strong background on experimental design and data analysis using statistical methods Advanced data fluency, including experience with open-source programming languages Demonstrated skills in analysis of large, diverse and complex datasets, and data visualization
Critical Technical, Professional and Personal Capabilities
Strong communication skills, and ability to distill complex concepts and deliver clear messages to non-expert audience Demonstrated creativity in problem solving and ability to drive innovation Strong initiative, results orientation, and ability to collaborative effectively in cross-disciplinary teams
